What is diarrhea? Diarrhea is the frequent passage of loose or watery stools, often more than three times a day. It occurs when the cells of the intestines stop digesting food properly, fail to absorb water, nutrients, and minerals, leading to the excretion of fluid from the body. Harmful chemicals produced by microorganisms irritate the intestinal lining, causing discomfort, and sometimes pain, with frequent urges to pass stools.
